Venice and Mestre
Mestre is a mainland town in the municipality of Venice, which is the most populated urban area. Venice’s historic center is easily reachable both by bus and by train within minutes. Losing yourself on the streets of Venice is a unique experience in the world. A city entirely built on water surrounded by a beautiful lagoon. A tourist destination par excellence, it houses the Basilica of San Marco in the famous Piazza San Marco which, with its spectacular five domes, is covered with sparkling golden mosaics. The Palazzo Ducale, the former seat of the government of the Serenissima Republic, is a splendid 15th-century palace now home to important art exhibitions; inside you can visit the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the Scala dei Giganti and the prisons which can be reached via the famous Bridge of Sighs. Opposite the Doge’s Palace is the Campanile di San Marco, an architectural symbol that has made the city known throughout the world. Almost 100 meters high, today it is an obligatory stop to observe Venice from a spectacular perspective. The Basilica della Salute has a large octagonal shape and the wonderful domes painted by Titian; the Island of San Giorgio, overlooking the basin of San Marco, is characterized by its church, the result of the genius of Palladio. The Rialto Bridge and the nearby market celebrate the most ancient Venice immersed in the surreal atmosphere of its timeless fields and courtyards.
